The Mailspike Blacklist (BL) is an IP-based DNSBL at bl.mailspike.net. It combines data from Mailspike's zero-hour list, z.mailspike.net, with poor reputation data from rep.mailspike.net, including IPs rated L3 to L5. That lets mail server administrators check an incoming IPv4 address with one DNS query and block mail from senders with poor or abusive reputation data.
When an IP address is found on this blacklist (or blocklist), the query returns an A record such as 127.0.0.2 or a Mailspike reputation code in the 127.0.0.10 to 127.0.0.13 range. Mailspike's recommended action for systems using this blacklist is to reject or block the connection at the MTA, before the message reaches the mailbox.
Common reasons for a Mailspike BL listing include:
- Compromised email accounts on your network being used to send spam, malware, or phishing emails.
- Compromised PCs or servers in your IP space sending botnet traffic or participating in distributed spam waves.
- Direct-to-MX traffic patterns that match Mailspike's automated reputation data for senders with poor historical behavior.
- Sinkhole or malware telemetry that indicates the IP still has unresolved abuse traffic.
Mailspike.io describes the service as free and community oriented. Low-volume, non-commercial use has historically been free when a site sends fewer than 100,000 messages and makes fewer than 100,000 DNS queries per day, but high-volume use should be checked against Mailspike's current terms before deployment.
Who runs Mailspike Blacklist (BL)?
Mailspike Blacklist (BL) is operated by Mailspike Technologies. The current Mailspike.io site says the service is by Mailspike Technologies and connects the team to email security systems developed through the AnubisNetworks brand since 2006.
AnubisNetworks was founded in Portugal and was acquired by BitSight Technologies in 2014. Mailspike now focuses on IP reputation, blocklist data, and email threat intelligence under the Mailspike brand.
How do I get removed and delisted from Mailspike Blacklist (BL)?
Before requesting removal from any blacklist (or blocklist), identify and fix the root cause of the listing. If you request delisting without solving the underlying problem, the same IP address is likely to be listed again.
Mailspike provides a self-service removal process through its lookup page. Use the Mailspike lookup to check the IP's status and request delisting for an observed IP. Once a request is submitted, Mailspike says the IP is usually delisted automatically within 6 to 36 hours.
For spam botnet or distributed spam wave listings, Mailspike says delisting occurs only after its systems collect network records showing that the malware threat has been mitigated. Because the service is free, support is limited and Mailspike only replies when more discussion is needed.

The impact of being on the Mailspike Blacklist (BL) is medium. A receiver that uses bl.mailspike.net in its MTA or filtering gateway can reject mail during the SMTP transaction. This creates delivery failures for traffic sent directly from the listed IP, especially when the same host also appears in other blacklist or blocklist checks.
Because Mailspike BL is IP based, fixing DNS authentication alone does not remove a listing. Authenticate every approved sender with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, but also stop the abusive traffic, remove malware, close relays, secure credentials, and review outbound mail logs before requesting delisting.
