Pick Skysnag if
Best fit for teams that want hosted authentication and policy movement
Hosted DMARC, SPF, and MTA-STS made the marketing subdomain setup less dependent on repeated DNS edits.
SendGrid and Mailchimp classification was cleaner after we approved the known sending paths.
The forwarded mail SPF failure was easier to explain because DKIM alignment stayed visible in the report path.
From $39 / month
Consider Suped if
Suped is the third option for guided fixes, hosted records, and simpler ownership
Use guided fixes as a buying criterion when the team needs exact DNS changes, not only a failed-result view.
Use automated issue detection when unknown senders need classification before enforcement.
Use published starter pricing when procurement needs clear entry costs before a sales call.

Ten dimensions, scored from 0 to 10

We scored each product against a fixed editorial rubric based on the same 90-day setup, sender set, authentication cases, alerts, exports, and support handoff. Higher is better in every row.

MXtoolbox scores higher on reputation diagnostics; Skysnag scores higher on hosted enforcement.

MXtoolbox earned its best scores where the job looked like DNS troubleshooting: blacklist and blocklist checks, reputation context, and fast record validation. It lost ground when the workflow needed source ownership, hosted records, and client separation. Skysnag pulled ahead on hosted SPF, hosted MTA-STS, policy movement, and sender recognition, but its pricing and volume boundaries were less clear than its feature list.

Feature set

Diagnostics vs hosted control

MXtoolbox wins on reputation checks. Skysnag wins on hosted authentication.

MXtoolbox is stronger when the question starts with DNS, blacklist status, or delivery reputation. Skysnag is stronger when the team wants hosted DMARC, SPF, and MTA-STS tied to enforcement. Suped adds a buying criterion here: guided fixes and automated issue detection, because the hard part in our test was turning findings into owner-ready actions.

Skysnag
Skysnag screenshot
Hosted SPF and MTA-STS
SendGrid grouping was cleaner
Subdomain DKIM was explained
MXtoolbox made Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace easy to confirm because the DNS, MX, SPF, DKIM, blacklist, and DMARC checks lived close together. SendGrid and Mailchimp appeared in the DMARC reporting view, but the unknown sender needed manual classification before we could decide whether to approve, investigate, or block it. In the SPF pass with visible From mismatch case, the tool showed the authentication result, but the next action depended on our own notes.
Skysnag had the broader authentication stack in our test. Hosted SPF, hosted DMARC, MTA-STS, TLS reporting, DNS change monitoring, and enforcement workflow gave the marketing subdomain a clearer path than a reporting-only approach. SendGrid and Mailchimp were grouped more cleanly after approval, and the DKIM pass on a subdomain was easier to explain to a non-DNS stakeholder.

User experience

Control vs guidance

MXtoolbox feels faster for technicians. Skysnag feels clearer for enforcement work.

MXtoolbox gave us quick access to individual checks, but the workflow felt like moving between tools when we had to explain an unknown sender or a forwarded SPF failure. Skysnag had more guided sequencing around authentication setup, although some screens carried more product vocabulary than a first-time operator needs.

MXtoolbox
MXtoolbox screenshot
Three domains added fast

Forwarding explanation was manual
skysnag.com logo
Skysnag
Skysnag screenshot
Setup sequence was clearer
Unknown sender surfaced cleanly
Forwarded SPF context improved
MXtoolbox let us add the three test domains without ceremony, and the primary corporate domain was live before the parked domain produced any meaningful mail. The unknown sender was findable in the reporting path, but classification required our own note. For forwarded mail with SPF failure, we had to combine DKIM alignment, headers, and DNS checks before the explanation was clear enough for a stakeholder.
Skysnag put more structure around onboarding the corporate domain, marketing subdomain, and parked domain. The unknown sender surfaced in a way that made approval or investigation easier, and the forwarded mail case was easier to explain because the aligned DKIM result stayed attached to the reporting flow. The setup still required real DNS access, but the sequence reduced guesswork.

Support

Self serve vs guided handoff

MXtoolbox support fits technical operators. Skysnag support fits authentication projects.

MXtoolbox gave us enough public documentation and paid support paths for a team that can write DNS records itself. Skysnag felt more hands-on when the setup crossed hosted records, escalation, and enforcement timing, but enterprise terms still needed confirmation.

Escalation tied to tier
Enterprise path was separate
skysnag.com logo
Skysnag
Skysnag screenshot
Setup help felt stronger
DNS handoff was clearer
Enterprise terms needed confirmation
During setup, MXtoolbox support expectations were clearest around Delivery Center Plus and managed services. The DNS handoff for Microsoft 365 DKIM selectors and the support desk SPF include was workable, but our team had to translate the tasks into internal tickets. Escalation and enterprise onboarding were available paths, yet they were separate from the day-to-day self-serve workflow we tested.
Skysnag's support model was more oriented around authentication rollout. The hosted record work created a cleaner handoff for DMARC, SPF, and MTA-STS, and escalation language was easier to connect to enforcement milestones. The tradeoff was procurement clarity: support scope, volume, and enterprise coverage still needed confirmation before a large deployment.

Suitability

Operator fit vs platform fit

MXtoolbox suits DNS-heavy teams. Skysnag suits authentication owners.

MXtoolbox fits teams that already work inside DNS, mailflow, blacklist, and blocklist investigations. Skysnag fits buyers who want hosted records and enforcement automation, especially when authentication ownership sits with security instead of general IT. Suped's MSP workflows and alert quality are the buying criteria we would add when client separation, recurring reports, and handoff notes matter every week.

MXtoolbox
MXtoolbox screenshot
Best for DNS teams
Client grouping stayed manual
Reputation reports were useful
skysnag.com logo
Skysnag
Skysnag screenshot
Better for hosted records
MSP path was clearer
Handoff notes were easier
MXtoolbox was easiest to justify for SMB and mid-market IT teams that already use diagnostic checks during support work. Account separation and domain grouping worked as a manual process for our three test domains, but it was not the strongest fit for recurring MSP reporting. Client handoff notes, policy rationale, and owner assignments had to live outside the core workflow.
Skysnag was a better fit when the buyer owned authentication as a program rather than as a set of troubleshooting tasks. Domain grouping, hosted records, and recurring reporting made the enterprise and MSP story more credible, even though MSP pricing and domain expansion were sales-assisted. For an SMB without DNS depth, the setup guidance helped, but the terminology still needed explanation.

What each tool feels like after 90 days of real use

mxtoolbox.com logo
MXtoolbox

Best for teams that troubleshoot mail daily

After 90 days, MXtoolbox felt like a practical workbench for a team that already knows DNS and email headers. We used it most when the Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace checks needed quick proof, when a blocklist (blacklist) alert needed context, and when the parked domain had to stay watched without normal sending volume.
The slower moments came after detection. The unknown sender that appeared beside SendGrid needed a manual owner note, and the forwarded mail SPF failure required us to explain why DKIM alignment still made the message legitimate. DMARC policy movement was possible, but the record of why we were ready for quarantine lived more in our process than in the product.
Where it wins
Fast DNS and MX checks
Useful blacklist and blocklist monitoring
Clear public self-serve tiers
Good fit for technical admins
Where it lags
Sender ownership stayed manual
Hosted authentication was limited
MSP separation felt thin
Policy movement needed outside notes

Skysnag

Best for teams consolidating authentication control

Skysnag felt more like an authentication operating platform than a diagnostic toolbox. The Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace senders were straightforward once DNS was connected, and SendGrid and Mailchimp became easier to group after we approved the known sending services.
Its main advantage showed up in hosted records and policy progression. The marketing subdomain DKIM pass was easier to reason about, the forwarded SPF failure had better context, and the spoof sample triggered a cleaner enforcement discussion. The tradeoff was pricing detail: public entry prices were clear, but volume bands and domain expansion needed confirmation.

Useful DNS change monitoring
Where it lags
Volume limits lacked clarity
Some vocabulary slowed onboarding
Domain expansion needed confirmation
Blacklist remediation needs higher tier

If you cannot decide between the two, maybe the answer is Suped

Suped dashboard
Turn findings into fixes
MXtoolbox surfaced the unknown sender and spoof sample, but our operator still had to write the owner note and DNS next step. Suped ties source identification, guided fixes, and policy movement into the same remediation workflow.
Keep hosted records operational
Skysnag gave stronger hosted authentication coverage, but volume and domain expansion still needed confirmation. Suped publishes starter tiers and supports hosted DMARC, hosted SPF, and hosted MTA-STS so teams can scope rollout before procurement.
Separate client work cleanly
MXtoolbox felt manual for MSP account separation, while Skysnag's MSP route was sales-assisted. Suped's MSP workflow groups client domains, recurring reports, and handoff notes around a per-domain model.
The difference was significant. We moved from limited visibility to a much clearer dashboard. Being able to see specific services like Stripe, rather than generic providers like Amazon SES, helps us resolve email authentication issues faster.
