The TechTheft Source Blacklist (source.bl.techtheft.info) is an IP-based blacklist that automatically lists IP addresses based on data from its spam traps. According to its operators, this blocklist is private and available only for internal use by its subscribers. Subscriptions are by invitation only to trusted parties.

The policy for this blacklist or blocklist is to add IP addresses automatically when they are observed engaging in malicious activity. The types of activities that can lead to a listing include:

• Sending spam or any email to their spam traps.
• Being an open proxy or relay used for sending spam.
• Operating as a virus-infected machine that sends spam.
• Sending email with forged sender details.
• Sending challenge-response emails to spam traps.

The blacklist is operated by an organization called TechTheft. Their stated goal is to combat what they term "Hi-Technology Theft", which includes spam, viral attacks, and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. They believe that much of the internet's bandwidth is stolen by malicious actors and that a firm stance is required to stop it.

TechTheft's philosophy is that simply filtering abuse is insufficient. They advocate for what they call an "Internet Death Penalty" against sources and supporters of internet abuse. This involves completely blocking offending machines, their support structures (like DNS and web hosts), and even their registrars. This approach was developed in response to the perceived shortcomings of earlier anti-spam systems, aiming to be faster and stricter to prevent abuse at its source.

Removal from the TechTheft Source Blacklist is an automatic process. There is no manual delisting form or request page. A listing is removed automatically after the last detected instance of abusive activity from the IP address has ceased.

Before the automatic removal can occur, you must resolve the underlying issues that led to the listing. TechTheft states that you must ensure all active abuse complaints related to your IP have been handled. They recommend taking the following steps:

• Identify and stop the source of the malicious activity originating from your IP address. This could be a compromised account, a vulnerable web script, or a virus-infected machine.
• Make sure a functional 'abuse@yourdomain' email address exists for your domain and the domain associated with your IP address.
• Ensure that any complaints sent to your abuse desk are investigated and resolved quickly.

Once these issues are fixed and no further abusive traffic is detected by their traps, the IP address will be automatically delisted.

The impact of being on the TechTheft Source Blacklist is generally considered low. This is because it is a private blocklist used internally by a select group of subscribers. Unlike major public blacklists that are used by thousands of mail server administrators worldwide, the reach of this blacklist is limited.

However, if you are trying to send emails to a recipient whose organization subscribes to TechTheft's data, your emails will be blocked. While the overall impact may be low, it can cause significant deliverability problems with specific domains and recipients who use this service.
