When we dove into Mail Tower, we found a focused suite of tools primarily centered around DMARC reporting and analysis. Its strength lies in providing clear visibility into email authentication results, making it easier to understand who is sending email on your behalf and if they are properly authenticated.
The platform offers comprehensive data aggregation, allowing us to parse through DMARC, SPF, and DKIM records efficiently. We appreciate its ability to break down complex email flows into actionable insights, which is crucial for moving towards a DMARC enforcement policy.
Proofpoint Email Fraud Defense, in our experience, extends well beyond just DMARC reporting, offering a broader email security ecosystem. It integrates DMARC capabilities within a larger framework designed to combat various forms of email fraud, including phishing and impersonation.
The feature set includes sophisticated threat intelligence, lookalike domain detection, and a virtual takedown service. While it handles DMARC, its primary focus felt more about overall threat mitigation, providing a holistic view of email attack vectors rather than a singular DMARC reporting focus.
How easy is each product to use
User experience
Navigating Mail Tower is generally straightforward. The dashboards are clean and present DMARC data in an easily digestible format, which we found beneficial for quick assessments. Setting up new domains and configuring reports was intuitive, even for those less familiar with the intricacies of email authentication.
The user interface prioritizes clarity, avoiding overwhelming users with excessive information. We felt it was designed for DMARC practitioners who need to quickly identify issues and track progress towards enforcement, without unnecessary distractions.
Proofpoint Email Fraud Defense presents a more complex user interface, which is understandable given its broader feature set. We found that it required a steeper learning curve to fully utilize all its capabilities, particularly when integrating with other Proofpoint products.
While powerful, the dashboard can feel a bit dense with information. It's built for security professionals who manage a wide array of threats, meaning DMARC reporting is one component among many, and sometimes required more clicks or deeper navigation to access specific DMARC insights.
Which product has the best support
Support
Mail Tower's support is responsive and knowledgeable, often provided directly by the product team. We found their team to be very hands-on, providing practical advice for DMARC implementation and troubleshooting. It felt like a personalized experience, which is a significant plus.
Documentation is clear, and we found their support staff helpful in guiding us through some of the more nuanced DMARC issues. For a specialized tool, this level of focused expertise is highly valuable.
Proofpoint's support structure is extensive, typical of a large enterprise vendor. They offer various tiers of support, and in our experience, the quality can vary depending on the specific issue and the support representative. For complex DMARC deployments, dedicated consultants are available.
While their resources are vast, including a comprehensive knowledge base, we sometimes experienced longer wait times or a need to escalate issues to find the right expert. Their support is geared towards a broad product suite, so DMARC-specific issues might require navigating to specialized teams.
Who should use each product
Suitability
Mail Tower is an excellent fit for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and organizations primarily focused on achieving DMARC enforcement without the overhead of a larger security suite. Its simplicity and focused approach make it accessible for teams with limited dedicated email security personnel.
For Managed Service Providers (MSPs), Mail Tower offers a streamlined way to manage DMARC for multiple clients. Its clarity in reporting and ease of setup makes it a strong candidate for MSPs looking to add DMARC services. Enterprise clients might find it suitable for a dedicated DMARC solution, but would need to integrate it with other security tools.
Proofpoint Email Fraud Defense is primarily designed for large enterprises with complex security needs and significant budgets. Its comprehensive feature set, including advanced threat detection and incident response, aligns well with the requirements of large organizations facing sophisticated cyber threats.
While it includes DMARC, it's part of a broader security platform. For SMBs, it might be overkill and too costly. MSPs could potentially leverage it for their larger enterprise clients, but it's not inherently multi-tenant in the same way a pure DMARC reporting tool might be, requiring more hands-on management per client.

Drawbacks and what to watch out for
While both Mail Tower and Proofpoint Email Fraud Defense offer valuable DMARC capabilities, we've identified some areas for consideration. Mail Tower, being highly specialized, might lack the broader security features that larger enterprises require. Proofpoint, conversely, can feel like overkill for organizations solely focused on DMARC, with a steeper learning curve and a potentially higher price point.
We have pulled the average ratings from G2 for each product, and also included the most recent negative reviews for each product in full. Positive reviews tend to have less detail and have a higher chance of being fraudulent, so negative reviews are a better signal for your decision.
